London: Lawyers' survey on 'timesheet padding' raises eyebrows

More than a third of British lawyers responding to an online survey say they have inflated their timesheets to make more money.

RollOnFriday, a legal blog with a wide readership in London, said 35.5 per cent of nearly 900 respondents to its anonymous survey admitted billing clients for time they did not actually work.

More specifically, 13 per cent said they did so regularly, 12.6 per cent said they did so occasionally, and nearly 10 per cent said they did so rarely.

Jamie Hamilton, a director at RollOnFriday, told The Times that timesheet padding a widely-known practice, but clients rarely complain “because they’re happy that they’ve got the result they wanted at a price they think is reasonable”.
