Limerick Prison reveals new ‘family room’ for children visits

Limerick Prison has opened a new family sitting room in a bid to make the prison more friendly for children visiting their imprisoned parents, the Limerick Leader reports.
The newly-renovated room was revealed this week following collaboration with the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) on supporting women offenders.
Human rights commissioner Teresa Blake said: “Women in Irish prisons are a unique group. Maintaining family relationships is essential to them.”
Prison governor Mark Kennedy has also commissioned other renovations to improve the Mulgrave Street premises.
He said: “We removed the razor wire along the front of the prison and we’ve taken steps to transform what was a grey, stern building.”
