Lengthy probate process causing strain
Delays in the probate process are putting families attempting to settle their deceased relatives’ estates under pressure, the Irish Independent reports.
Research has found it takes an average 16 months to finish the process in Ireland, compared to between three and four weeks in England.
A survey commissioned by Royal London, a life insurer, found that most people in Ireland know a family member encountering delays.
Former Justice Minister Francis Fitzgerald previously said a review of the regime was underway.
Meanwhile, the Courts Service has said it is concerned and is carrying out a review.
“Our analysis of claims in 2016 found the average time to complete probate was 489 days, or 16 months,” Greg Dyer of Royal London said.
