Lawyers banned from canvassing for judicial appointment

Lawyers will not be considered for appointment as judges if they canvass for elevation to the bench, the Irish Independent reports.

The move will be included in the Government’s Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2016.

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald (pictured) said the common practice of candidates canvassing Government ministers will be made “unlawful”.

A similar ban is already in place for canvassing members of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board and the new ban will extend to those lobbying the proposed new judicial appointments commission.
