Last court challenge clears path for abortion referendum outcome to be implemented

Michael D. Higgins

The last legal challenge to implementing the outcome of the abortion referendum has been dismissed by the Supreme Court, The Irish Times reports.

President Michael D. Higgins is now expected to sign the Thirty-sixth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2018 into law early next week.

The Supreme Court said there were no grounds to hear an appeal of a case dismissed by the Court of Appeal as “a frustration of the democratic process”.

The final result can now be certified by the returning officer, paving the way for the Constitution to be amended.
