Justice committee to examine social distancing in courtrooms

The Oireachtas justice committee will turn its attention to courts and courthouses on its return from the summer recess.

The justice committee has outlined its work programme for autumn 2021, which includes pre-legislative scrutiny on new hate crime and policing reform bills.

Committee cathaoirleach James Lawless said: “The committee will examine if courthouses are structurally suitable to ensure social distancing and have the facilities to conduct remote participation; as well as examining the overall number of courtrooms and issues around accessibility and security.”

The committee will also examine issues around women’s shelters, domestic abuse refuges and the engagement of minority groups with the justice system.

“The scheduled programme follows the committee’s significant achievements of the spring/summer session, where considerable and impactful work was completed against the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic,” Mr Lawless said.
