Judicial expenses up 15 per cent on last year

Irish judges have claimed €1.088 million in expenses in the first half of 2018, a 15 per cent increase on the same period last year, The Irish Times reports.
The increase from €941,922 in the first half of 2017 appears to be driven by the appointment of new judges, who need to purchase robes.
According to the Courts Service of Ireland, judges in the District Court claimed a total of €673,086 in expenses.
Judge Cormac Dunne received the largest sum of €34,897, though this included €20,299 in expenses arrears dating back ten years.
The other top payments to District Court judges were:
- Judge James Faughnan - €31,871
- Judge Conall Gibbons - €24,246
- Judge Brian O’Shea - €23,936
- Judge Paul Kelly - €21,967
- Judge Alan Mitchell - €21,710
- Judge Seamus Hughes - €20,919
- Judge Gerald Furlong - €21,265
- Judge John Cheatle - €21,425
Circuit Court judges claimed €347,074.
Judges in the High Court claimed €63,718 in expenses, including €1,848 for incidental expenses including judicial attire for recent appointee Mr Justice Denis McDonald, and judges in the Court of Appeal received €1,051.
The Supreme Court judges claimed a total of €3,640 in expenses, including €657 for the Chief Justice, Mr Justice Frank Clarke.
