Judicial appointments bill makes progress, but won't pass by summer

The Government’s controversial Judicial Appointments Commission Bill passed the second stage in the Dáil last night with support from Sinn Féin and left-wing TDs.

However, The Irish Times reports it will no longer be possible for the bill to be passed before the summer recess, as originally sought.

The bill is now likely to be approved by the Oireachtas in the autumn.

The next step for the legislation is for it to be examined by the Oireachtas select committee on justice and equality.
