Judges to rule on whether Hooded Men case should go to ECtHR Grand Chamber

Judges will decide today whether the “Hooded Men” case should be referred to the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) for a final ruling.

In March, the ECtHR dismissed the Government’s application to revise the Ireland v United Kingdom ruling, which found that the Hooded Men were subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment but not torture.

The revision was sought after the Government received a large number of documents in 2014 which had not been disclosed by the UK government at the time of the original hearing.

The Government said in June that it would appeal the ECtHR decision.

A panel of five judges will today decide whether or not to refer the case on to the Grand Chamber for a final ruling.
