Retired judge and author James J O’Sullivan has died at the age of 85, The Irish Times reports.

Judge O’Sullivan retired in 2002 as one of Ireland’s longest serving judges, having spent 32 years on the District Court bench.

Having struggled with alcoholism earlier in his career, he drew on his personal experience as a judge to help establish the first problem-solving alcohol rehabilitation court in Ireland.

He published his first novel, The Stiletto, in 2011. He said at the time that it was “inspired by my experiences on the bench”.
