Seán Brassil has been promoted to general counsel at the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU).
Mr Brassil, who practised as a barrister before joining the IRFU in 2015, brings extensive legal expertise and a deep understanding of sports law to his new role.
He has played a central role in some of the most significant legal and commercial developments in Irish Rugby over the past decade.
These include responsibility for developing the legal framework for the IRFU’s first collective agreement for professional players in 2017, advising on the introduction of professional contracts for female players, and more recently leading negotiations for the newly-established Nations Championship tournament.
In his new role as general counsel, Mr Brassil will lead the IRFU’s legal function, advising its leadership and board on strategic legal issues and contributing to the ongoing evolution of governance and regulatory excellence in Irish rugby.
Commenting, Kevin Potts, chief executive of the IRFU, said: “We are delighted to appoint Seán Brassil as our general counsel.
“Seán has been central to some of our most important commercial and regulatory work in recent years.
“His expertise and deep commitment to the game make him exceptionally well-placed to lead the IRFU’s legal team as we pursue our strategic ambitions for Irish rugby.”
Mr Brassil added: “I am honoured to step into this role and grateful to the colleagues across the organisation who I have worked closely with over the past decade.
“My focus now is ensuring we maintain the highest standards of governance while capitalising on the commercial opportunities ahead.”
