Inquiry into Quinn Insurance to be headed up by retired judge Iarfhlaith O’Neill

An inquiry into alleged regulatory breaches at Quinn Insurance Limited (QIL) is to be conducted by retired High Court judge Iarfhlaith O’Neill, barrister Ita Mangan and John Cashin, former in-house lawyer at Zurich Insurance, the Irish Independent reports.

The inquiry into QIL, which went into administration and was subsequently acquired by Liberty Insurance in 2011, began earlier this year but has yet to have public hearings.

Last October, Liam McCaffrey and Kevin Lunny, two former directors of QIL, lost a case in the High Court to delay the inquiry, in which they claimed it breached their constitutional rights.

The inquiry could see executives face sanctions as well as a fine of up to €500,000.
