IIEA to host human rights event in Dublin

The IIEA will host a fireside chat on Thursday in Dublin with United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Dr Alice Edwards, and Caoilfhionn Gallagher KC, entitled The Resurgence of Torture: New Realities in International Relations

The conversation will draw on Dr Edwards’ expertise as the first woman to hold this mandate in its 40-year history; the evolution of torture in modern conflicts and on efforts to support victims across regions worldwide.

Dr Edwards has documented human rights violations and advocated for justice, rehabilitation and peace on behalf of victims and survivors in major wars, including Russia-Ukraine and Palestine-Israel. Previously, she served as the chief legal adviser at the UN Refugee Agency (2000-2015) and led the inter-governmental Convention against Torture Initiative (2016-2021). In 2024, she was nominated for Australian of the Year.

Ms Gallagher is a barrister who has acted over the past 25 years in human rights cases and is a specialist in journalists’ safety, accountability for wrongful deaths, arbitrary detention, child rights and violence against women and girls. She has secured the freedom of over 80 imprisoned journalists, lawyers, musicians, artists and activists wrongly imprisoned worldwide.
