The International Criminal Court (ICC) is to move away from Microsoft software in favour of an open-source alternative in response to sanctions imposed by the US government, according to reports.

In May this year, it was reported that Microsoft disconnected the email account of the ICC’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan KC, after he was personally sanctioned by the Trump administration.

The Trump regime is thought to be considering new sanctions against the ICC as an institution, which could impact its use of US technology services.

The ICC is now pre-emptively ending its relationship with Microsoft and will instead use an open source alternative called openDesk, according to German newspaper Handelsblatt.

openDesk has been developed under a German government initiative focused on “digital sovereignty” and is now widely used in the German public sector.
