Hundreds of barristers take advantage of debt collection service

Hundreds of barristers have taken advantage of a debt collection service launched by The Bar of Ireland in 2014, the Irish Independent reports.

A company called LawServ was engaged by the regulatory body in October 2014 to help barristers chase solicitor firms for unpaid fees.

In a statement, The Bar of Ireland told the Irish Independent that recouping fees remained “a long-standing challenge” for members.

The Bar said it is “not at liberty to disclose the level of debts involved, but the figure remains substantial”.

In the statement, the Bar also said it is involved in “ongoing dialogue” with the Law Society of Ireland over the issue.
