HSE committee to recommend ward of court reforms

A key HSE committee is set to recommend major changes to the current wards of court system, The Irish Times reports.

The HSE National Safeguarding Committee will launches its major review of the system this Thursday.

The Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015 will eventually abolish the wardship system, but a clear date for its full commencement has not yet been set out by Government.

The appointment of Dublin solicitor Áine Flynn as director of the Decision Support Service precedes the commencement of part 9.

More than 2,600 people are currently protected as wards of court.
