Germany: Former Auschwitz guard faces prosecution

A 94-year-old man who worked in the Auschwitz death camp for at least a month has been charged by German prosecutors with accessory to murder.

The public prosecutor’s office in Stuttgart has filed charges with Mannheim Regional Court against the unnamed man, who is a 94-year-old German citizen born in modern-day Serbia.

He began training as a guard in Auschwitz as a 19-year-old in October 1942 and worked there from December 1942 until January 1943.

During that time, prosecutors believe that at least 13,335 people were murdered in the gas chambers there.

Mannheim Regional Court will now decide whether the case should go to trial. Any trial will take place before a juvenile court, because the man in question was a teenager at the time of the crime.
