Garden of Remembrance to be given protected status

The Garden of Remembrance in Dublin is to be given statutory protection under the Planning and Development Act 2000, The Times reports.

Dublin City Council will add the memorial garden, which commemorates those who died fighting for Irish freedom, to its record of protected structures.

The list keeps record of structures which are “of special architectural, historical, archaeological, artistic, cultural, scientific, social or technical interest”.

The garden was opened in 1966 by President Éamon de Valera on the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.
