Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen jailed after lying to Congress and transferring hush money

The lawyer who said he would “take a bullet” for Donald Trump has been jailed for three years after being found guilty of lying to Congress and enabling illegal payments to women who had allegedly had affairs with the US president.

Michael Cohen, 52, told the court he undertook the crimes because of “blind loyalty” to Mr Trump.

“I have been living in a personal and mental incarceration ever since the day that I accepted the offer to work for a real estate mogul whose business acumen I deeply admired. I know now, in fact, there is little to be admired.”

He told US District Judge William Pauley: “I take full responsibility for each act that I pled guilty to. The personal ones to me and those involving the president of the United States of America … It was my duty to cover up his dirty deeds.”

Supreme Court lawyer Neal Katyal said the sentence was “bad news for Trump”, and tweeted: “In most jurisdictions, subordinates who carry out felonies at the direction of their boss get lower criminal sentences than the boss.”
