Flanagan to seek Cabinet approval for study on sexual abuse and violence

Justice Minister
Charlie Flanagan

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan will bring proposals to Cabinet by the end of the month on a new two-year study on sexual abuse and violence in Ireland.

It follows a recommendation from a scoping group set up last year to consider the availability of data on sexual abuse and Ireland following the last major study in 2004.

The scoping group was made up of experts and relevant Department officials, and chaired by Professor Dorothy Watson, associate research professor at the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and adjunct professor of sociology at TCD.

If Cabinet agrees to the proposal, the study is likely to commence in 2019 and be completed by 2021.
