Flanagan in talks about equipping gardaí with tasers

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan has said he is “engaging with the representative associations” on measures such as equipping gardaí with tasers.

He made the comments while unveiling a plaque in memory of Garda Michael Clerkin who was killed by an IRA bomb in 1976, The Irish Times reports.

The minister said: “I have no plans to arm An Garda Síochána. However, it has to be said that to the order of 10 per cent members of An Garda Síochána do carry guns for their protection.”

When asked whether tasers could be issued to gardaí instead of firearms, Mr Flanagan said: “These are issues that I am engaging with the representative associations on.”
