Flanagan expressed 'grave concern' over handling of prison deaths

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan expressed “grave concern” about the handling of deaths in Irish prisons according to private correspondence seen by the Irish Examiner.

In a letter sent to staff last week, Caron McCaffrey, director general of the Irish Prison Service, said recent reports by the Inspector of Prisons indicated “some staff” are not adhering to their obligations under the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

She added: “This issue has been raised by the Inspector of Prisons, the Secretary General of the Department of Justice and Equality and most recently by the Minister for Justice and Equality who has expressed to me his grave concern at this issue.”

Ms McCaffrey warned staff that failures to adhere to the SOPs would now be “deemed to be gross or serious misconduct and, if found guilty of this breach, the normal sanction will be a recommendation for dismissal”.
