First prosecutions to be brought under sex buyer law

Two men have been charged under an Irish law criminalising the purchase of sex for the first time, the Irish Examiner reports.

The men will appear before the courts next year accused of offences under section 25 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2017.

The law was commenced last March, but anti-prostitution groups have complained since then that it is not being properly enforced by gardaí.

The legislation has also come under fire from lawyers, sex worker advocacy groups and Amnesty International, who said it would subject sex workers to a greater risk of violence.

The men were arrested following an investigation by the Operation Quest team at the Garda National Protective Services Bureau.
