Fiosrú begins work of drawing up human rights framework

Ireland’s new police ombudsman has appointed Paul Mageean and John Wadham to develop its human rights framework.

Fiosrú was formally established in April under the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024, replacing the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC).

Mr Mageean and Mr Wadham, who both have extensive experience in policing and human rights, have been contracted by Fiosrú to develop a human rights framework and screening tool for the organisation.

The work will be completed over a number of months.

Mr Mageean is a solicitor in Northern Ireland who heads Belfast firm Mageean Law. He is the chief parole commissioner in Northern Ireland and was a member of Ireland’s Policing Authority until it was replaced by the new Policing and Community Safety Authority.

Mr Wadham is a solicitor in England and Wales who has served as a human rights advisor to the Northern Ireland Policing Board since 2019.
