And finally… the bells, the bells

The judge appointed to preside in the Kerry District over the next few weeks had an embarrassing moment on his first morning in court after he mistook nearby church bells for a mobile phone ringing.

Judge David Waters is filling in for Judge James O’Connor, who is ill.

The morning session yesterday was interrupted a few times by mobile phones ringing loudly, the Irish Examiner reports, leading Judge Waters to threaten that any further phone that rang would be confiscated.

At noon, the sound of the Tralee Angelus bell in nearby St John’s Parish Church rang clearly through the courtroom, leading Judge Waters to snap at gardaí: “Can we get that phone please?”

But Judge Waters was told it was just the sound of the nearby bell.

He said he thought it was someone with a religious ringtone.
