Final report of sex crimes review delayed to first quarter of 2019

A review of the investigation and prosecution of sexual offences in Ireland will now report to Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan sometime in the first quarter of the year, the Irish Independent reports.

The review, chaired by Tom O’Malley BL and announced last April in the wake of the high-profile Belfast rugby rape trial, was originally meant to report to Mr Flanagan by the end of 2018.

Mr Flanagan said last year that the review “represents an important step in ensuring that victims of sexual violence will not be further traumatised by the trial process, and that perpetrators of such serious crimes can be held to account”.

He told the Irish Independent that the working group on the review has “made considerable progress” in examining “the complex and sensitive issues surrounding witnesses in trials of sexual offences”.

The minister added: “I look forward to receiving the group’s report as soon as it is finalised, which is likely to be around the first quarter of 2019.”
