Field work: District Court convenes in the countryside

A District Court judge held a “special sitting” in a field in a bid to gain first-hand insight into a dispute over the building of a countryside wall.

Judge Patrick Durcan had to borrow a pair of wellies from An Garda Síochána to venture into a field near Kinvara for the “special sitting of Cahermore District Court”, the Irish Examiner reports.

The dispute between Brian Gill, 37, and Brian Murphy, 38, concerns damage allegedly done to Mr Murphy’s field during the construction of a five-foot stone wall built by Mr Gill in compliance with an earlier court order.

The two farmers, their solicitors, four gardaí and a court registrar accompanied Judge Durcan to the farmland to hear submissions from each side.

The solicitors for the men have been allowed to decide when Mr Gill should go on to Mr Murphy’s land with his digger to clear the debris.

The case was adjourned to 28 February at Gort District Court.
