Ethics watchdog urged to investigate Leo Varadkar

The Standards in Public Office Commission (SIPO) has been asked to investigate whether Tánaiste Leo Varadkar breached codes of conduct by leaking a confidential document.

Paul Murphy, socialist TD for Dublin South-West, wrote to SIPO yesterday in the wake of a political scandal concerning contract negotiations between the government and the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) in 2019.

Mr Varadkar accepts that he provided a copy of the agreement reached with the IMO to the president of the rival National Association of General Practitioners (NAGP), but denies any breach of confidence or personal gain.

In a letter sent to SIPO yesterday, Mr Murphy called on the watchdog to investigate whether Mr Varadkar breached the Code of Conduct for Office Holders and/or the Code of Conduct for Members of Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann.
