England: Tommy Robinson conviction quashed over technical failings

Mr Robinson, 35, from Luton, admitted the charge and was sentenced to 13 months’ imprisonment in May after he made a film outside Leeds Crown Court.

At the Court of Appeal in London today, Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett ruled the inferior judge made a number of technical flaws and quashed the finding, meaning Mr Robinson will attend the Old Bailey for the allegation to be heard again.

Lord Burnett said: “We are satisfied that the finding of contempt made in Leeds following a fundamentally flawed process, in what we recognise were difficult and unusual circumstances, cannot stand.

“We will direct that the matter be reheard before a different judge.”

The film featured people in a criminal trial that was subject to the usual reporting restrictions was recorded by Mr Robinson and broadcast on social media.
