England: Police officer suspended after allegedly using AI to bias evidence in rape cases

A number of rape convictions are being reviewed after a police detective was suspended over allegations that he used AI to generate evidence and case documents in a way designed to secure desired outcomes.

The officer, from Derbyshire Police, has been removed from frontline duties and is the subject of a criminal investigation into the alleged misuse of AI software.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the detective is alleged to have used an AI chatbot to prepare documents including victim impact statements and case summaries for prosecutors. It is claimed he prompted the software to maximise the impact of statements and to produce material likely to support charging decisions.

One source said the officer had allegedly used “good-sounding words” to achieve outcomes he believed were justified.

The detective had worked on a number of rape investigations before the allegations emerged, although he was also involved in other types of criminal cases.

Derbyshire Police is investigating the officer on suspicion of offences including perverting the course of justice. No arrests have been made and no charges have been brought.

The Crown Prosecution Service said it is engaging with defence lawyers and the courts over the affected cases but has not disclosed how many convictions are under review.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council recently established a specialist unit, PoliceAI, to oversee the adoption of the technology across forces in England and Wales. Its head, Alex Murray, has asked some forces to pause the use of AI in preparing court documents while safeguards are developed.

Derbyshire Police said it had informed PoliceAI of the investigation and would share any lessons arising from the case once inquiries are complete.
