England: Plans mooted for separate entrances for complainants in court buildings

David Gauke

Justice Secretary David Gauke has announced proposals for all refurbished and new magistrates’ and Crown Court buildings to have separate entrances for complainants and defendants, while court staff will be told to use a “more compassionate” tone with complainants, to indicate their empathy.

The plans are included in the Victims’ Strategy package of proposals published today, which also includes greater explanation of sentences for victims of serious incidents and more information on acquittals for complainants.

A new post, that of independent public advocate, is also being planned by the Ministry of Justice, to help guide and represent bereaved families during inquests and inquiries.

The plan has been devised following the handling of the Grenfell Tower fire last year in addition to a report on the experience of the relatives of the Hillsborough victims.
