Dublin solicitor John Synnott has objected to a €10 million proposal to redevelop and expand a hotel into space occupied by his offices.

Mr Synnott’s firm, John Synnott & Co, is based on the first floor of Dame House, which was purchased by the neighbouring Mercantile Hotel in 2017, The Irish Times reports.

The Mercantile Group has lodged plans to increase the number of bedrooms in the hotel from 28 to 109, which includes a proposed change of use for the first floor of Dame House.

However, Mr Synnott has objected to the plans, writing to the council: “I am a current occupier of Dame House and have no intention of leaving my business premises.”

He added: “It is my family’s practice and has been in occupation by my father since 1955, myself since 1970, with the potential for one of my children to continue the practice at some point in the future.”

The lawyer, who specialises in personal injury cases, said the application “needs to be assessed in terms of my practice’s continuing occupation of the building”.

He has called on the applicants to “provide a revised floor plan at first floor level showing my premises remaining as it is and indicating how access to my premises for myself and my clients is to be secured”.
