DPP worker convicted under Official Secrets Act in relation to dissident murder

A civil servant working for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has been found guilty of breaking the Official Secrets Act in connection with the prosecution of a suspected murderer.

Jonathan Lennon, 35, denied four counts of disclosing information to three named men about the arrest of a suspect in a case concerning the 2013 murder of dissident republican Peter Butterly.

The offences, which can carry a sentence of up to six months and a €127 fine per charge, were said to have taken place on 7-8 September 2017.

Judge John Hudges, sitting in Dublin District Court, yesterday convicted Mr Lennon on all charges after an eight-day non-jury trial, the Irish Independent reports.

Sentencing has been adjourned until next Thursday 6 June to allow for medical reports to be prepared.
