Dozens of prisoners were forced to sleep on the floor in Cloverhill Prison between April and June 2018, Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan has confirmed.

Mr Flanagan said the prison, as the primary remand prison for the Leinster area, “has recently been affected more significantly in terms of the increased number of committals in the past year”.

The issue was also exacerbated by refurbishment works which have been completed in recent weeks.

A breakdown shows that the number of prisoners on the floor peaked at 40 on Monday 4 June 2018, but had been brought down to three by the end of the month.

The average number of prisoners on the floor was eight in April, 21 in May and 15 in June.

There were no prisoners sleeping on mattresses on the floor after the refurbishment works were completed in July.
