The scheme, which is managed by the Irish Prison Service and the Probation Service gives qualifying prisoners the opportunity to complete unpaid community work as a condition of early release.

To be eligible the prisoner must be assessed as posing no threat to the community, be serving a more than one, but a fewer than eight year sentence and already have served at least 50 per cent of that sentence.

Mr Lynn was serving his sentence at low security Shelton Abbey Prison in Co Wicklow.

Having been extradited from Brazil in 2018 in order to face trial, Mr Lynn was convicted in part for obtaining multiple mortgages on the same properties with different financial institutions.

Judge John Edwards, dismissing an appeal on the severity of his sentence to the Court of Criminal Appeal in 2025 stated that Mr Lynn had brought the profession into disrepute and had leveraged his position as a solicitor to facilitate his crimes.
