Deportations from Ireland 'peak when lawyers are on holiday'

A solicitor who specialises in immigration and refugee law has warned that deportations from Ireland this year will likely peak in August, when lawyers are least likely to be able to intervene.

Wendy Lyon, solicitor at KOD Lyons in Dublin, told The Irish Times that there was a “perception among practitioners that we do notice this happening more in August”.

It comes as new figures reveal June 2018 saw 20 people deported from the State, the highest out of any month this year.

A total of 117 people have been deported from the State so far this year, Department of Justice figures show.

Ms Lyon said: “It’s not just ourselves on holidays but barristers too who you would need to go to into the High Court.

“They know it’s much more difficult for us to do anything for our clients at that time of year. The courts aren’t back until October.”

Lucky Khambule, spokesperson for the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland, echoed her comments.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said asylum applicants are “given every opportunity to make their cases at all stages of the process”.
