Cybersecurity centre facing funding challenges due to tech giants

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is facing resourcing challenges because tech giants such as Google and Facebook are based in the State, the Sunday Business Post reports.

A note prepared for Communications Minister Denis Naughten earlier this year warns that Ireland is acting as a “de facto security regulator … on a European basis”.

It states that the NCSC will “have to contend with the additional workload brought about by the presence in Ireland of the HQ functions of the large US multinationals … for example Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Google”.

New EU rules on network and information security also “place a number of significant responsibilities on the state and on businesses in respect of cyber security”, according to the note.

The Department of Communications has increased the NCSC’s budget from €430,000 to €3 million over the past six years.

Its staffing was increased from 14 to 28 last year and the subject is expected to be addressed in a new strategic plan due next year.
