Cork solicitor aims to set another athletic world record

Cork solicitor Sinéad Kane has announced her plan to beat the world record for longest distance covered on a treadmill in 24 hours.

Ms Kane (pictured), who is blind, already made history last year by becoming the first visually-impaired athlete to complete the World Marathon Challenge - seven marathons on seven continents in seven days.

She has already claimed the world record for longest distance covered on a treadmill by a female athlete in 12 hours.

That was a 130.5-kilometre run, whereas the record to beat in 24 hours will be 247.2 kilometres, a record set by Edit Berces in 2004.

Ms Kane plans to make the new record attempt “quite soon”, IrishCentral reports. She added: “It’s going to be quite tough, and this time around I hope a lot of people get behind me.”

She told TV3’s The Six O’Clock Show: “I’m trying to challenge the perceptions that people with disabilities can’t do things.

“When I first got into running a lot of people looked at me as the poor, blind girl running around. That was how they viewed me, but now they view me as a competitor.

“I always want to push the boundaries and I’m always trying to be better and to stretch myself to the limit.”
