Consultation seeks views on future of sheriffs

A public consultation is seeking views on whether sheriffs should be replaced with a “more efficient and cost effective” system of debt collection.

Sheriffs currently carry out a number of roles on behalf of the State, including civil debt enforcement and fines collection for the Department of Justice.

A joint review group was established by the Department of Justice and the Office of the Revenue Commissioners last year, with a remit to consider whether the role of sheriffs is in line with “best international practice”.

The group is now welcoming submissions relating to its terms of reference.

The consultation period will run until 5pm on Friday 24 March 2023.
