Consultation launched on future of Limavady Courthouse

The consultation seeks the public’s views on a proposal to permanently close and dispose of the court building.

Limavady Courthouse is currently temporarily closed. It was last used for court business in March 2020, when it opened once a week for Adult Magistrates Court business. Limavady Adult Magistrates Court business is currently heard at Coleraine Courthouse.

Ms Long said: “The NI Courts and Tribunals Service (NICTS) Estate Strategy, ‘Making the Place for Justice’, is structured around 4 Aims and 12 Strategic Outcomes that, if realised, will result in a courts and tribunals estate that can provide modernised and improved facilities for all citizens of Northern Ireland.

“Evidence indicates that Limavady Courthouse falls far below the standards that all court users should rightly expect and that there are significant physical and financial constraints that would prevent NICTS’ achievement of its Estate Strategy Aims within Limavady Courthouse. The temporary reallocation of business to Coleraine Courthouse provided Limavady court users access to higher quality, safer, more modern and more accessible facilities.”

Ms Long added: “I would urge anyone with an interest in, or views on, the future of Limavady Courthouse to consider this proposal and respond to the consultation, including views on how Limavady Courthouse could be repurposed within the community, so that I might consider before any final decision is taken on its future.”

The consultation opens today and will close on Friday 21 August 2026.
