The Commission on the Future of Policing is set to publish its final report later today, over a year after it was set up.

Kathleen O’Toole, former Chief Inspector of the Garda Inspectorate, headed up the commission and presented her final report to the Cabinet this morning.

She was asked to look at cover Garda structures and management arrangements, the appropriate composition of personnel, the culture and ethos of policing, the appropriate structures for governance and oversight, and the legislative framework for policing.

Speaking about the commission last April, then Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said was “determined this fundamental look at the future of policing will ensure we have an open, transparent, efficient, 21st Century police service”.

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan is expected to adopt most, if not all, of the commission’s high-profile recommendations.
