China: Prominent human rights lawyer loses license to practise

A prominent Chinese human rights lawyer has seen his license to practise revoked shortly after openly criticising the Communist Party of China.
Yu Wensheng, 50, said he had received a letter from China’s Bureau of Justice cancelling his license because he had not been employed by a licensed law firm for more than six months.
However, his wife said municipal authorities in Beijing had blocked his attempts to set up an independent legal practice because he had “openly expressed opposition to the Party’s leadership”.
Mr Wensheng has criticised the Communist Party and President Xi Jinping over China’s crackdown on lawyers and activists.
He has also attempted to defend Wang Quanzhang, a fellow lawyer jailed in July 2015, though authorities have refused to give him access to Mr Quanzhang, who has rejected state-appointed lawyers.
