Chief State Solicitor warns proposed office building could impact national security

Maria Browne

The Chief State Solicitor, Maria Browne, warned Dublin City Council that a proposed commercial development could compromise the privacy of her office and Irish national security.

Ms Browne wrote to the council to object to plans lodged for a seven-storey office block on Ship Street Great and Chancery Lane near South Great George’s Street, The Irish Times reports.

The proposed building would stand at 111 feet, making it considerably taller than the proposed accommodation block previously granted permission at the site.

Ms Browne told the council: “We are concerned that this will impact on the lighting, overlook and privacy of the staff in the office. This office has particular security requirements given the sensitive nature of the work carried out for and on behalf of Government.

“The nature of the documentation handled and processed in this office is of national importance and can extend to top-secret papers, which if compromised from a privacy/security aspect could be problematic.”

Similar privacy concerns were expressed by the nearby Chester Beatty Library.

Dublin City Council has told developers Luxor Investments Ltd to scale down the proposed development.
