Caoilfhionn Gallagher KC has been named International Woman of the Year by Irish Tatler.

The magazine said it was “honoured to celebrate an Irish-born human rights lawyer whose career blends courtroom excellence with fearless public advocacy for the world’s most vulnerable”.

Ms Gallagher, who is originally from Dublin, practises as a barrister with Doughty Street Chambers in London.

Irish Tatler said: “A UCD graduate with further study at Cambridge, she has spent over two decades building an international reputation in press freedom, arbitrary detention and child rights — representing bereaved families, detained journalists and survivors in some of the most consequential cases of our time.

“In 2023, she was appointed [Ireland’s] special rapporteur on child protection, using her independent statutory role to demand accountability, expose systemic failings, and push for real, child-centred reform. Throughout 2025, her rigorous reporting and forensic engagement have placed her at the centre of national child-protection scrutiny.

“Beyond Ireland, she continues to shape global human-rights law — defending journalists and strengthening legal protections worldwide. She is currently part of the international legal team, alongside Amal Clooney, representing Nobel laureate Maria Ressa.

“Her courage, moral-compass and commitment remind us of the power of persistence and principle.”

Irish Tatler’s Women of the Year Awards took place at The Shelbourne on Saturday 15 November.
