ByrneWallace hosts conference for HR professionals

HR professionals recently attended a half-day conference on employment and compliance laws at ByrneWallace’s offices in Dublin.

The firm hosted the 2nd Annual Employment and Compliance Laws in the Public Sector in association with Legal-Island.

This conference reviewed the latest developments and statutory requirements in relation to employment and compliance laws affecting the public sector, with key topics of discussion including:

  • An update on employment and equality: including reasonable accommodation and other issues;
  • Recruitment developments: including new laws on spent convictions and vetting;
  • Information developments: including the new data protection regulation (General Data Protection Regulation) and recent cases in freedom of information law; and
  • A case law round-up: including important latest case law decisions that have a direct application in public bodies, with a particular focus this year on disciplinary issues and whistleblowing.
  • The panel of speakers included senior partners and lawyers from ByrneWallace’s employment, health and social care, data protection and public sector teams.

    Michelle Ní Longáin, employment law partner and a lead lawyer in the ByrneWallace public sector group (pictured), said: ”ByrneWallace has over 25 years’ experience advising the public sector and working extensively with public sector bodies in the area of employment and compliance and other legal advice.

    ”We have worked closely with many Local Authorities and Government Departments on significant and strategic matters with nationwide reach, and most recently provided significant training to HR Managers in the Civil Service on discipline and dismissals and protected disclosures and other key issues. We also drafted the new Disciplinary Code and Underperformance Policy for the Civil Service and the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform’s Guidance for Public Sector bodies on the Protected Disclosures Act 2014.

    “Given our extensive experience, we are well positioned to advise public bodies across all areas of law from employment and compliance to corporate and are delighted to have this opportunity to host this important event.”
