Bicentenary of Sligo Gaol to be marked with commemorative weekend

A weekend of events to mark 200 years since Sligo Gaol opened is set to take place this September.

Friends of Sligo Gaol have organised the bicentennial weekend from 7-9 September 2018 with encouragement from Sligo County Council, who have designated 2018 as the “Year of Sligo Gaol”.

The jail housed Irish nationalists Michael Collins, Charles Stewart Parnell and Michael Davitt over its long history from 1823–1959.

The weekend programme includes a book launch, a day conference on crime and punishment in the 19th century, and a commemoration of Michael Collins on the 100th anniversary of his incarceration.

More details on these events, include information on how to attend, will be announced on the Friends of Sligo Gaol website in due course.
