And finally… something wicked

Two men have been imprisoned in Zambia for attempting to use witchcraft to kill the country’s president.
Leonard Phiri and Jasten Mabulesse Candunde have been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment after being found guilty of offences under the Witchcraft Act, the BBC reports.
The trial judge said the pair were “not only the enemy of the head of state but were also enemies of all Zambians”.
The case is the first time anyone has been accused under Zambia’s colonial-era witchcraft law of targeting the country’s president.
However, the judge stressed in his ruling: “The question is not whether the accused are wizards or actually possess supernatural powers. It is whether they represented themselves as such, and the evidence clearly shows they did.”
The two men were arrested with various charms in their possession, including a live chameleon. They received a concurrent six-month sentence for possessing charms.
Zambian president Hakainde Hichilema has previously said he does not believe in witchcraft.
