An eel smuggler has been slapped with a record €7.2 million fine by Spanish authorities.

The man, who has not been identified, will also have to serve a 15-month prison sentence after being convicted of trafficking a protected species.

He was caught in 2017 while travelling between Spain and Morocco with 65kg of the rare glass eels in suitcases, The Times reports.

Glass eels are believed to fetch as much as £7,000 per kilogram on the black market.
