And finally… roll of honour

And finally... roll of honour

A campaign has been launched to secure UNESCO recognition for the Scottish morning roll – with Scottish Greens MSP Holly Bruce backing calls for it to be recognised as part of Scotland’s “cultural heritage”.

Ms Bruce has lodged a motion at Holyrood highlighting the roll’s history, cultural significance and working-class heritage, supporting food historian Peter Gilchrist’s campaign.

She said the morning roll had been “woven into the fabric of everyday life across the country” and deserved international recognition.

Mr Gilchrist said: “Morning rolls have sustained Scotland’s people for half a millennium.”

He said the rolls were part of local traditions, with communities having their own bakeries, fillings and cafes.

UNESCO’s living heritage register covers practices and traditions passed between generations, including culinary practices.

The campaign follows a 2023 scare over the future of Morton’s Rolls, whose production resumed after its business was rescued from administration.
