And finally… off the wagon

A man who told police his car had been stolen later found out he had sold it while drunk so he could continue drinking.

The New Zealander went to Rotorua police station to tell police that someone had nicked his car.

In reality, he had sold it for $800 so he could keep buying drinks.

Senior sergeant Dennis Murphy said: “Thankfully the man who bought the car checked the registration the next day on the CarJam website as he was worried it might be stolen.”

He added: “The man came into the station with the car to let us know what had happened. We were able to get in touch with the original owner and told them to sort it out between them.”

Mr Murphy added that police were used to telling people not to drink and drive but they had a new warning: “The lesson here is don’t drink and sell cars.”
